Watertown, MA (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

Audio Spotlight directional speaker systems were recently incorporated into the “Capturing Resonance” installation at Massachusetts’ deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, the eighth in the museum’s ongoing PLATFORM series. Sound artist/composer Spencer Topel and sculptor Soo Sunny Park, both faculty at Dartmouth College, collaborated for the first time on the installation, to create an interactive environment filled with ever-changing sonic and visual elements.

By using motion triggers in conjunction with highly directional Audio Spotlight sound beam speakers and low-frequency bass exciters throughout the gallery, Topel and Park are able to evoke unique ethereal layers of various sound states as visitors pass through the exhibit. Topel’s audio content varies in composition, from soft chords and tonal pads to prolonged instrumental passages – the intensity and frequency of which also fluctuate, based on the number of and movement of people within the exhibit space.

The always-evolving soundscape proves to be the perfect compliment for the equally varying visuals created by Park’s sculpture and its endless colorful reflections and refractions of natural and artificial light within the gallery. By using sculpted chain link fencing as a frame for thousands of tinted plexiglass squares, rainbow hued shadows fill the space, shifting from sharp representations of the structure itself into abstract waves of color washes as the sun moves along its daily path.

Holosonics’ Dr. F. Joseph Pompei, inventor of the Audio Spotlight directional speaker comments, “While our day-to-day work with the technology largely addresses commercial applications and reducing the world’s noise, we always enjoy seeing people do creative work with the Audio Spotlight technology.” He enjoyed seeing the installation in person, and will be visiting Dartmouth’s campus for a technical presentation at Thayer School of Engineering as part of their invited speaker series.

“Capturing Resonance,” remains active at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum through July 29th, 2012.

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) January 18, 2012

During the Fall 2011 semester, Academy of Art University students from the School of Industrial Design and the School of Fashion learned a valuable lesson about creating designs out of recycled materials, as they were challenged to come up with their own sustainable designs out of 700 feet worth of banners that had been previously used to promote the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The 72-foot long, 5 foot wide banners, which hung from the ceiling of the Hyatt in downtown San Francisco in July and August 2011 as part of a promotional campaign, were provided by the Aquarium to the Academy as part of the “Sea Fashion Challenge,” a collaboration between the organizations to encourage environmentally friendly designs in the Bay Area.

An exhibit of the student designs is currently on display at Atelier, 79 New Montgomery St in San Francisco, and available to view online at http://bit.ly/w4VyG1 where the public can vote on their favorite piece of work. Prizes will be awarded to the winning designs, including a “Feeding Frenzy Tour” of the Aquarium for the First Place team, which includes a chance to serve breakfast to the animals; a Behind the Scenes Tour for the Second Place team; and 2 tickets to the Aquarium for each member of the Third Place team.

“Academy instructors are constantly coming up with new challenges to help students gain the skills they are going to need to be successful in the workforce,” said Elisa Stephens, President of the Academy of Art University. “The Sea Fashion Challenge required students to reuse materials, think creatively, work in groups, and complete the project in a timely fashion – all skills they will have to master to be effective in the marketplace. We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and thank them for their support in helping Academy students obtain hands-on experience in sustainable design.”

Approximately twenty Academy students participated in the Sea Fashion Challenge which resulted in the creation of products including dresses, jackets, cushions, and a watch band. To learn more about the Aquarium’s sea turtle and penguin banners that

hung at the Hyatt Regency in downtown San Francisco, visit this New York Times story about the campaign nyti.ms/oGaNU6.

“The banners were so beautiful hanging in the Hyatt lobby, we were sorry to see them come down,” said Mimi Hahn, the Aquarium’s vice president of marketing. “We’re thrilled to have found a way not only to reuse them, but also to have them made into something unique and beautiful. Hopefully, the fashions inspire a connection to the oceans for the students who created them and people who see them.”

About the Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium inspires conservation of the oceans through compelling live exhibits, a rich suite of educational programs and groundbreaking conservation research projects, as well as its Seafood Watch consumer guides. The aquarium is considered one of the world’s best, and has won several awards for its exhibits, programs and outreach. It opened in 1984 and hosts nearly 2 million visitors each year.

New York / Berlin / Paris (PRWEB) February 02, 2012

If you haven’t noticed already, now is a good time to take a look at the world of online art sales. In the last year we we’ve seen the launch of the cyberspace VIP Art Fair (whose second iteration opens next week), and Christie’s New York hosted its first exclusively online auction during its Elizabeth Taylor blitz in early December.

The past year saw some big prices on artnet Auctions, too. Below are highlights of the 2011 sales on artnet Auctions in the categories of unique works of art, prints and multiples, and photography.

Unique Works

As in conventional auctions, postwar material drew some of the highest prices. Never far from the top in any art sale, Andy Warhol snagged first place (not just for unique works, but for all works) with the sale of Flowers, for US$ 1.3 million, which was the second highest price for a Warhol “flower” painting at auction last year. The canvas has flowers in a deep, bright shade of blue and is one of four in the Flowers series dated 1978; the vast majority of these works date to 1964–1965.

In a different mode entirely are two pictures by Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889–1975) that fetched US$ 198,559 and US$ 143,750. The Regionalist painter and one-time mentor to Jackson Pollock (American, 1912–1956) depicted his family enjoying a palm-tree dotted beach in Eleuthera (1955), named for an island in the Bahamas where the Bentons vacationed. The bigger price was paid for the mythical Ten Pound Hammer (1965), which shows three black men working on railroad tracks with a train steaming in the background. Benton must have liked the image—he released it as a lithograph in 1967 in an edition of 300.

A conceptual video sculpture by Nam June Paik (American/Korean 1932–2006) sold for US$ 92,000, proving that mixed media works can do well online, too. Polaris (1990) is composed of four televisions arranged like petals around a globe and backlit by concentric neon florescent tubes. It was exhibited in a 2000 survey of the artist’s work at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Another conceptual work, the checkerboard abstraction Check #9 by Sherrie Levine (American, b.1947), sold for US$ 115,000. Levine gained notoriety in the ‘80s when she exhibited her “photographs of photographs” by Walker Evans (American, 1903–1975) of desolate farmers during the Great Depression, unaltered and indistinguishable from the originals. Her solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art is just closing now, and her oeuvre seems particularly resonant today with the renewed debates concerning appropriation and copyright infringement in art.

Prints and Multiples

A portfolio of 37 prints by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, otherwise known as Le Corbusier (Swiss, 1887–1965), was the highest-earning work on artnet in the prints and multiples category. If the architect’s buildings lead you to believe he dreamt only in black-and-white, the Unité series (1953, printed in 1963) is evidence to the contrary. The set has 17 prints in color and 17 of the same prints, sans color, along with three additional black-and-white prints.

This particular folio belonged to the architect Mohindra N. Kawlra, who worked closely with Le Corbusier in the 1950s. It established the record for prints by the artist at auction when it sold for US$ 57,500 at the inaugural design auction on artnet in May 2011.

Three of the top 10 prints were by Warhol, but second place was taken by an artist with whom he collaborated. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s (American, 1960–1988) set of four, large-format screenprints titled Portfolio II was originally printed around 1982. The present set, which sold for US$ 47,727, was a posthumous edition printed in 2004–2005. A portfolio of five prints called Flowers (1990) by Basquiat’s friend and fellow street artist Keith Haring (American, 1958–1990) brought US$ 32,775.

In a year when Zhang Daqian (Chinese, 1899–1983) overtook Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) as the year’s top auction earner, it comes as no surprise that a set of 10 prints by five leading Chinese artists also makes our list. The Giants of Contemporary Chinese Art (2005) contains two prints each by Fang Lijun (Chinese, b.1963), Yue Minjun (Chinese, b.1962), Wang Guangyi (Chinese, b.1956), Zhang Xiaogang (Chinese, b.1958), and Zeng Fanzhi (Chinese, b.1964). It is the last of an edition of 99 and sold for US$ 34,150.

Warhol’s portraits of Chairman Mao, Mick Jagger, and the Marx Brothers brought US$ 37,000–54,500, and a Warhol-esque screenprint of a crying Marilyn Monroe (complete with diamond dust) by “neo-pop” artist Russell Young (British, b.1960) realized US$ 27,780.

Photographs

Warholmania gripped the photographs category as well. One set of 12 photos that features some of the artist’s most beloved subjects, among them Salvador Dalì (Spanish, 1904–1989), Liza Minnelli, Jackie Onassis, and Pope. The portfolio sold in May for US$ 140,300, over its high estimate of US$ 120,000. Earlier in the year, another suite of the same photographs brought US$ 126,500 against a high estimate of US$ 90,000.

A relatively tame picture by famed homoeroticist Robert Mapplethorpe (American, 1946–1989) showing two men in profile sold for US$ 83,636, and a large-format Thomas Struth (German, b.1954) photograph of a cemetery in Tokyo, dated 1996 and donated by the artist, raised $ 80,500 for the victims of last year’s devastating earthquakes in Japan during the Arts for Japan charity auction, produced in collaboration with Berenberg Art Advice.

Early photography brought strong prices as well. An 1893 winter landscape by Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946) brought in US$ 40,250, and a portrait of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (French, 1940–1917) from 1905 by Gertrude Kasebier (American, 1852–1934) fetched US$ 51,750. And a pair of Paul Strand (America, 1890–1976) prints mounted back to back in one frame was taken for US$ 57,500.

Wichita, Kan. (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

The online art gallery, overstockArt.com, is pleased to introduce new pieces to its new line of hand carved and hand painted ceramic tiles. The latest addition to the hit line includes masterpieces by Wassily Kandinsky and Georgia O’Keeffe. The line was launched in the spring of 2011 with art trivet tiles.

Long recognized as the go-to source on the web for purchasing art reproduction oil paintings, the new line of decorative ceramic tiles has been met with much success.“Since introducing the line last spring we have sold out on nearly each and every item that has been introduced,” said David Sasson, overstockArt.com’s president and CEO. “Our biggest challenge is to keep up with the demand.”

The decorative ceramic tile line consists of three different products. The inlay tiles are available as a single image tile or a mural image in a set of 12 tiles. They can be used in a variety of places including, baths, backsplashes, fire places, and walls. The trivet tiles can be used as wall décor or as decorative trivets. Like the paintings available on overstockArt.com, the ceramic tiles focus on reproductions of great masters such as Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, and more.

The new decorative ceramic tiles introduced to the line include:

“Farbstudie Quadrate,” Wassily Kandinsky – The rich colors and strong geometrics of Kandinsky’s tour-de-force comes to life in a 14” x 11” inlay tile or 14” x 11” art trivet tile, both are available for $ 49.

“Oriental Poppies,” Georgia O’Keeffe – Vivid shades of red, orange and yellow burst from this stunning replication of O’Keeffe’s famous work of art depicting a detailed view of a poppy. A 14” x 11” inlay tile or 14” x 11” art trivet tile are available for $ 49.

Sasson explains that the company went to great lengths to create a superior product, “We developed a unique technology that makes the tiles extremely durable – they do not scratch or react to hot surfaces.” He continues, “The tiles are all hand painted, using rich colors and creating a texture of ‘brush-like-strokes’ that translate beautifully to this medium. The ceramic tile line provides our customers with a new and unique way to display fine art in their homes in a functional form.”

Additional art trivet tiles and inlay tiles are now available, view the full line at http://www.overstockart.com/ceramictilegallery.html. Check back often, as the company plans to expand the collection in the months ahead with more artists and styles.

If you live in Atlanta, you might have already come across Corey Barksdale’s paintings in art festivals, galleries, and more recently on some of the walls of the city. This bright African American artist brings life to his designs with great textured colorful elements and creativity. His work reflects his many sources of inspiration, with a focus on music and dance – Jazz music in particular -, urban city life and the love and strength present within the African-American community. Corey has carried out numerous projects for businesses and individuals throughout Atlanta, and he has participated in art shows all over the United States. Over the last few years Corey has developed his skills as a mural artist. One of the major projects he recently completed was a 30 feet mural painting for the Beltline, Atlanta’s ambitious urban redevelopment project. Rob Brawner, the Atlanta Beltline program director was thrilled with the result, stating that: “Corey was able to bring the Atlanta BeltLine alive through his colorful interpretation of the project.” Another much acclaimed mural project he completed this summer was a vast wall painting for the Ben Hill Recreation Center in south Atlanta, as part of the Paint Big project, an initiative by Wonderroot, Living Walls, Dorian McDuffie and the City of Atlanta Office of Recreation. On another note, but again involving the City of Atlanta, through the Office of Cultural Affairs this time, Corey recently had the honor to be asked to …

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) January 24, 2012

An anomaly in today’s splashy, cookie cutter, need-it-now culture, H. Hal Kramer Co. (http://www.halkramer.com), a Chicago-based home wall décor company specializing in antique art reproductions, is carrying on a family tradition and keeping a historical craft alive while continuing to thrive and cultivate new fans of its unique product—handcrafted, vintage art known for its fine workmanship, understated elegance and affordable prices. Previously sold to decorators and fine furniture stores, the prints are now available online at the company’s website.

Hal Kramer founded the company in 1963. Kramer’s family owned an art gallery in Germany and his mother was a talented watercolorist. Kramer, a Holocaust survivor, escaped to the United States on the last boat out of Germany in 1940.

Kramer spent the early part of his career as a road salesman. Always an art lover, when Kramer identified a potential niche for smaller, miniature artwork, he and his wife, Ilene, got to work designing a line of small accessories in the basement of their townhome. The business was born with the design of a single item: a miniature cameo elegantly displayed and framed on an oval mat.

Kramer and Ilene meticulously handcrafted each of the early pieces, and when Kramer brought his first products on the road, he sold more than 100 in the first week. By the 1970s, he had acquired a workshop near Wrigley Field and opened a showroom in the Merchandise Mart. In an ironic twist of fate, a fire that damaged Kramer’s first workshop actually inspired a controlled burning process used for creating aged, one-of-a-kind prints—a technique the company and the art world still use today.

Even today, all of H. Hal Kramer Co.’s artwork is made to order by a master craftsman with decades of experience in antique art reproduction and restoration. The Kramer family workshop, on the north side of Chicago, looks more like an old cobbler’s studio than machine-operated picture frame assembly lines. Kramer’s daughter, Leslie Horwitz, keeps the books, and her husband, Peter Horwitz, is the head craftsman. Ilene Kramer, now in a wheelchair as a result of a stroke, still oversees day-to-day operations as president of the company.

Trained by Kramer, Peter Horwitz masterfully hand ages and antiques each print individually to produce the look and feel of an original lithograph. The company uses only carefully selected solid woods for its picture frames, some of which are uniquely shaped ovals and octagons. Each frame is hand-joined and nailed, and then individually distressed using only the finest, antiqued paints, glazes and finishes. The company’s matting papers, which are acid and lignin free, are always cut to museum standard specifications.

“We’ve stayed true to our original ideals, and our classic, unique pieces continue to enjoy a strong and loyal following among designers and art lovers,” says Peter Horwitz. “Our artwork captures a piece of the past and looks beautiful in both traditional and modern settings.”

Although the H. Hal Kramer Co. began with a single cameo accessory, its framed collection of English and European wall decor today includes more than 1,000 unique pieces. Its reproductions are primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the collection features landscapes, bird and butterfly art, botanical and floral art, golf and polo art, horse and hunt art, children’s wall décor, framed engravings, library and map art and more.

For nearly a half century, H. Hal Kramer Co. has been an exclusive purveyor to the professional interior design and fine furniture trades at the International Home Furnishing Market in High Point, North Carolina. The antique art adorns homes, offices and clubs around the world.

Queens, New York (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

The Executive Office Center at Fresh Meadows, which is decorated with nearly 70 black and white photographic images of historic Queens, obtained from the Queens Historical Society, has launched an online gallery of its photos. A sampling of the compelling images that line the hallways of the Queens business center can be viewed at http://www.executiveofficefm.com/hisphotos.htm.

The office center, serving Queens and Long Island with virtual office services, and serviced office space, welcomes visitors who are interested in viewing the actual display.

“The photographs dramatically illustrate how life in America has changed over the last 100 years,” said Jack Blumner, Executive Director of the office center. “When we opened last October, we thought it would be interesting to use historic images of Queens to decorate the office building rather than traditional artwork. It’s impossible to walk past some of them. They just stop you in your tracks.”

“Some of the photographs go as far back as the late 1800s, to the time before Queens was even a borough,” said Mr. Blumner. “There is a wonderful photo of the old Queens Court House in Long Island City, taken in 1887.” Others from the same time period include an image of the Flushing Post Office in 1895, and a 1895 image of the Van Siclen farm, the present day site of St. John’s University in Fresh Meadows.

Several photographs depict the turn of the century amusement park in East Elmhurst known as North Beach, which later gave way to the landing fields of LaGuardia Airport (shown in 1939, when it opened).

There are numerous images that show the development of the infrastructure of the borough over the years. There is a picture showing the construction of the Whitestone Bridge (1939), another of the building of the Queensboro Bridge (1915), and a 1908 photo of the construction of the Flushing 7 train line.

Queens was once home to some famous personalities, such as World Heavyweight Champion, James Corbett. A 1903 photo shows Corbett out for a carriage ride with his wife and two pooches, smiling amicably at the camera.

No photographic retrospective of Queens would be complete without photos of the 1964 Worlds Fair in Flushing Meadows Park. That marvelous summer, when the world came to Queens, is recalled in several photos of the Fair.

Few people who live in Queens today will remember that Flushing Meadow Park was also home to the 1939 Worlds Fair. One of the buildings that was built for the 1939 Fair later became the temporary home of the United Nations, from 1946 to 1951. A photo on display in the Executive Office Center conference room shows the historic vote by the UN General Assembly on November 29, 1947 to divide the British Mandate of Palestine into two states, one Arab and one Jewish.

About the Executive Office Center at Fresh Meadows:
